Some words just get thrown out in to the open. They sound good but they get used so often that all meaning associated with them gets lost. Online reputation repair is a prime example of some of those words. The big question here is: What is online reputation repair?
Let’s break it down in to baby steps. The first word: online. Online reputation repair has to do with how a company, product, or person appears online. Are they well known? Do people or consumers like them? The online world includes blog posts, review boards, competitor’s websites, social media sites and more. In each of these online sections, the good and the bad about a company can easily be displayed.
The next word: reputation. We all know this word. But what does it have to do with business and improving or defining it? A business’s reputation is everything. Think about that restaurant you never go to because it has a reputation for giving people food poisoning. Maybe that is a little extreme but you get the point. A bad reputation can have potential customers running in the opposite direction while a good reputation will have them flocking to your doors. In other words, reputation defines your company.
And the final word: repair. Another word that could be used in its place is “management”. This means fixing or controlling a business’s online reputation. It means being vigilant and knowing what is being said on the internet and then fixing it if necessary.

Online reputation repair is basically the process of replacing the search results that come up on Google, Bing, or whatever search engine you are using. When consumers or potential clients search for your company’s name or the name of products your company sells, it is important to have positive results show up on at least the first page. Not many searchers look at the listings beyond the first page but even so, most reputation management firms will focus on improving the listings on the first several pages for good measure.
Why does it matter what the listings say on a search engine? Doesn’t it matter more about what articles or reviews are out there? It matters because those articles and reviews are linked to the listings. The articles and reviews that Google sees as the most relevant are going to be listed near the top. And if those articles or reviews happen to be negative, then the company is in trouble because most consumers use a search engine to look up information before making a decision on a purchase.
Online reputation management is for those who realize how big of an impact Google listings have. For those who want to improve their listings so more positive ones show up at the top of the list or for those who want to ensure that the listings stay positive, online reputation management can change or maintain that status.
