Services and Limitations of Reputation Management Companies

Thinking of hiring specialists in reputation management? You may want to review your idea of what to expect from them. Reputation management companies can provide a wide range of services but there are things that they cannot do for you. It’s always good to be aware of these to avoid excessive expectations.

Can’s

  • A reputation management company can implement a system that will make it difficult for negative comments and unfavorable information to harm your brand or business name. There are many way of doing this. In the case of online reputation, one of most effective strategies is to establish a solid online presence and ensure that the top search engine results for a brand or business name (used as a keyword) are positive or at least neutral.

  • The diligent tracking or monitoring of online mentions is something a reputation manager can also do. The process can be automated for efficiency. Here, the aim is to make sure that positive mentions are promoted while the negative ones are suppressed.

  • There will be cases when damaging content can be taken down and should be taken down. Competent reputation managers should be able to do something about this.

  • Generally, reputation managers also attempt to build a good image for the client. If the client is a person, a credible and well-written biography or curriculum vitae should be put up online. For businesses or organizations, stories or histories should be written and presented to establish an identity. This is important to avoid mockup profiles from misleading potential customers or the public.

  • In the case of individual clients, some reputation managers can help link or associate a person to other people who can help boost their personal or professional stature. Conversely, they can also help get rid of unwanted associations.

  • A reputation manager may also do some PR work to maintain good relationships with customers, the public, and other businesses. Typically, employees of a particular business may engage in exchanges of defamatory or debasing arguments with the employees of other companies. Professional reputation management specialists, however, prefer to avoid this kind of situation. Instead of mudslinging or getting involved in arguments, reputation experts would try to pacify the situation and pay taunts with good demeanor.

Can’ts

  • Reputation management experts cannot be expected to provide a reputation repair plan that smacks of a legal defense. While they are expected to address damaging comments or feedback, they cannot be able to solve the legal problems of a company or person embroiled in a scandal that involves lawsuits or legal action.

  • It is also unlikely for a reputation repair expert to refute clear evidences of fault. The most that can possibly be done is to try to minimize the impact of the damaging evidences by spreading favorable information.

  • Also, it will be very difficult for even the best reputation managers to restore the clean image of someone who has been clearly proven of having done something wrong. A convicted scammer, producer/seller of counterfeit products, or a business found to be using illegal and harmful materials in the products they sell cannot expect reputation management schemes to restore their reputability.

Learn about the extent of what your reputation manager can do for you. Don’t waste money paying for a reputation repair service that is just bound to fail. Know the different situations where attempts to restore reputability can still work or may no longer provide any benefit.
